trade Secrets

Real-World Epoxy Tips You Can Actually Use:

Most floors fail at the edges. Everyone slaps product on thick, hoping it sticks but that just gives it a thicker edge to pull off when it fails. The best option is to grind all edges thoroughly by hand with a diamond grinder.
Always cut a key way into the substrate at termination points where you know there will be lots of traffic.

Termination Point Keyway for Epoxy Flooring

Detail work matters. Clients don’t notice the middle of the floor. They notice the edges and doorways first.

Don’t skip:

Diamond grind or shot blast. Nothing else. Acid etching is 1980s BS.
You need a CSP (Concrete Surface Profile) of 3–4 for most epoxy systems.
Check for oil stains—those need degreasing and scarifying, or they’ll ruin your bond.

Utilizing Downtime for Profit

Epoxy projects often have built-in downtime (waiting for coats to cure, etc.). Instead of letting crew members sit idle or just ‘cleaning up’, this time can be leveraged for additional tasks or revenue.
Tip: Use downtime for upskilling. Train your crew on new techniques, improve their knowledge of troubleshooting, or run through quick refresher courses. For example, when waiting for a coat to cure, go over the specifics of moisture testing or mixing ratios.
Advanced: If you’ve got larger crews, use this time to have them work on smaller projects like baseboards or trim installations, where you can still be on-site without affecting the main epoxy work. This way, you’re using the full value of their time.

Know When to Say No

Why it matters: As your business grows, you’ll be tempted to take on every job that comes your way. However, not every job is a good fit.
How to do it: Set a standard for the type of jobs you want to focus on. If a client is too picky, won’t pay your rate, or has unrealistic expectations, don’t be afraid to politely decline.
Pro tip: Referring clients to other professionals is a good way to maintain relationships without compromising the integrity of your business.
